Beverly Goodwin
Job title: Human Resources Director
On the Brook Hills staff since: 1999
Birthday: July 14
Family: My husband, Rus, is Minister to Adults at NorthPark Baptist Church. We have been married 23 years. We have two sons. Andrew (19) is a freshman at the University of Mobile, and Benamin (14) is an 8th grader at Oak Mountain Middle School.
Ministry Calling: My ministry focus has evolved over teh years. I began working with teenagers before Rus and I married, and his calling to youth ministry kept me there for a number of years. When Andrew was four years old there was a need for a teacher in his Sunday School class and out of frustration that no one would teach his class I volunteered.
I found my passion! I love working with preschoolers--especially three-year-olds. I enjoy watching them grow each year from babies to little people with minds of their own. I especially love teaching them the Bible stories each week and answering their questions.
What I Enjoy About Serving at Brook Hills: The people! I have come to love my coworkers over the past six years and consider them family. I also enjoy helping members of the Brook Hills Faith Family when they call with questions.
Interesting and Unusual Facts: The most interesting and unique thing about me is my younger son Benjamin, who has Down Syndrome. When I was pregnant with Ben the doctors at UNC Chapel Hill wanted us to terminate the pregnancy. "But God has a plan!" From the time of Ben's birth to the present I have witnessed God's hand on his life and through him on the lives of others he has come in contact with.
It is through Benjamin that I have learned the true meaning of worship. To watch Ben's face as he sings praise to the Lord is to witness uninhibited and true worship.
My Relationship with Christ: My parents took me to church from the time I was born. I "joined" the church when I was eight years old. It wasn't until I was seventeen and at a summer youth camp that I realized I was a sinner. Sitting on a bridge over a river somewhere in Alabama I asked Jesus to forgive my sin and be the Lord of my life.
Favorite Movie of All Time: Stepmother (with Julia Roberts and Susan Sarandon)
Favorite Musical Group or Artist: Too many to name
Favorite Sport: Soccer--whichever team Andrew is playing on at the time.
Favorite Thing to Do on a Saturday: Spend time with my family
Favorite Scripture: Colossians 2:6-8
Last Thing I Do Before Going to Bed: Make sure all the lights have been turned off
A Historical Figure I Would Like to Meet: The Apostle Paul, or maybe Billy Graham
In High School I Was Most Likely to Be: The shyest girl
These Days I Am Most Likely to Be: Working or decorating the house we just bought
